A Green Sanctuary Workshop
The UU Seventh Principle Project has developed “Green Sanctuary,” a
handbook and program for liberal congregations to take positive steps in their
ecological/spiritual growth. Using the Green Sanctuary Handbook as a guide, a
congregation assesses building, grounds, purchasing, and other areas including
the worship service itself and commits to changes that will make their church
more environmentally sound and sustainable as an institution.
We have seen a great tide of interest and commitment to the idea that ecological
consciousness is central to our spirituality. If spiritual groups can do this
in our meeting places, our green sanctuaries can model this path for everyone
to take home and take to heart.
Musician, activist Jim Scott will present a Green Sanctuary workshop and benefit
concert. Jim has been Co-chair of the UU Seventh Principle Project and helped
create the program and accompanying handbook. He offers these events to both
educate about this ecological/spiritual program taking hold with many churches,
and also to help raise monetary support for the seventh Princople Project to
continue this work.
The two to three hour workshop will include an introduction to the elements of
the Green Sanctuary program in a context of inspiration and renewal. Participants
will hear the latest news about the movement now involving more than 100 congregations
and have an opportunity to meet others interested in taking on the program in
their churches.

Making Art of Our Visiion
"Making
Art of our Vision"
Collaborative Expressions on the State of the Earth and Visions for Our Healthy
Future
In
this workshop, Jim facilitates a time of creative play with no judgments,
but with a serious outcome. We'll put our
creative impulses
toward a vision
for a better world.
Considering the changes we could make in our lives, it's important to remember
we can do it with artistry and concern for the well-being of all. Creativity
is the alternative to violence and other acts of desperation - addiction
and out of balance consumption, etc. - this improvisational play is a peace
practice
and a health practice. Jim has offered these workshops in many academic
and recreational situations over 20 years. He's also been active in developing
the "Green Sanctuary" program being taken up by many churches.
In
a context of spiritual renewal, Jim facilitates exercises (games) in sound,
movement, visual art and word play. Not a "jam session" or
a time for soloists to be singled out, everything is done in collaboration.
The works
of music, art and theater that we might create can be part of a new mythology
for a sustainable culture.
No experience is necessary, just interest in music, creativity and the community
we can make together. Any and all musical instruments are welcome, some instruments
and all necessary art materials will be provided. Wear loose clothes for moving
and perhaps sitting on the floor. And be prepared to have fun!
