    A Song for the Earth
    music - Jim Scott ©1979
lyrics - Jim Scott and Joel Sattler ©1979

As the rain sifts through the trees,
    it threatens nature's ancient harmony.
Poison rain from an ailing sky,
beneath the ground roots will die,
And that is why I sing this song for the earth.

The tainted river struggles to the open sea.
    Defiled is the mountain's majesty.
    All of life is a chain;
when one is hurt, we all feel the pain.
    What do we gain?
For what it's worth, I'm offering this song for the earth.

The sea is where all life begins. The ocean is our origin.
If she dies nothing survives. No, no one will be left behind.
And who will look with awe upon the monuments of humankind?

But the trees still strive to grow,
    watching generations come and go.
Green and tall, the land is theirs,
feeding the soil, clearing the air,
living their song, a song for the earth

Still the Sun will Shine Jim Scott ©1981

Chemical miracles make their way to the mother's breast,
Thus the fortunate inherit poisons while famine threatens all the rest.
Oh, there's so many people, suffering backs against the wall,
Sometimes it makes me wonder, is there any hope for us all?
But what I want to say to you tonight is just that I know we all get tired. Sometimes you feel like giving up the fight
and waiting for the world to expire.

But still the sun will shine and the winds and the tide will change,
Just as the moon will surely turn from full, to old, to new again.

They say it's just a peaceful atom, with energy that knows no season,
Yet the tiny plutonium particle takes another life without reason.
No smoke rises from the cooling towers, how can we make them see
That the promise of a greed fulfilled will not be had for free?

But still the sun will shine and the winds and the tide will change,
Just as the moon will surely turn from full, to old, to new again.

The rich devour the poor, for sure the strong believe they will survive.
But what price to feel secure, and must it cost so many lives?
Oh, swords into plowshares, but will we have the choice?
We cry for peace as we prepare for war, will no one hear our voice?

But still the sun will shine and the winds and the tide will change,
Just as the moon will surely turn from full, to old, to new again.

    There's a Way Jim Scott ©1985

I would just as soon let some days go by
without worryin' 'bout the things I haven't done.
And I would just as soon let some time go by
without worryin' about battles never won.
I would just as soon let a woman or a man
live in peace on the land, and before we would judge
the way they live their lives, we'd be prepared to lend a hand.

There's a way and there's an ease to the life we lead,
There's a dream of peace not so far away.
There's a force and there's a flow to the life we lead,
If we will just release and let it it be that way.

I would just as soon let all wounds heal in time
without worrying about who deserves the blame.
And I would just as soon there'd be no heroes in war.
though you win, you lose, it all turns out the same.
    I would prefer we'd find a compromise,
so nobody dies in a senseless fight
over how to divide the earth or seas, or skies.

I would just as soon passing fashions delight
without binding us to all in life that's vain.
And I would just as soon that passions be of love,
and not dominance and war for selfish gain.
It would be enough for me, the fleeting beauty of the wild,
that I might be beguiled, without boundaries without lies,
that I could see with the eyes and the wisdom of a child.

It's Only Love Jim Scott ©1988

No ears to hear it, no voice to speak,
    suddenly lonely, suddenly meek.
Feeling so strongly, feeling so weak.
It's only love. It's only love. It's only love.

Fear and confusion, clouds in the skies,
    secret delusions, unspoken lies.
Sudden conclusions, tears in your eyes.
It's only love. It's only love. It's only love.

Someone elses dreams were so real,it seems,
you were in there too; something just came over you,
and it wasn't two - but love.

Floating on winds, then dropped to the ground,
Cries and laughter, without a sound.
Feeling so lost for what we've found.
It's only love. It's only love. It's only love.

Fires of Creation Jim Scott ©1992

There is a song that sings forever. There is a melody clear and true.
There is a dance that runs together, a path to peace we follow it through.
There is a play for all our living. There is a stage we make our own.
There is a tale of love and giving retold by a chorus or one voice alone.

May the dance take me lightly in its arms
may the song lift me gently on its wings.
May the fires of creation burn brightly in my heart
that I might so briefly touch the magic of all things.

There is a lofty monument. There is a shadow cool and long.
There is a poem of moments spent in quiet court with spirit strong.
There is a canvas, great and small. There is a stroke of brush or pen.
There is a mirror reflecting all, revealing the truth to us again.

May the dance take me lightly in its arms
may the song lift me gently on its wings.
May the fires of creation burn brightly in my heart
that I might so briefly touch the magic of all things.

There is a flower that blooms unnoticed. There is a tool that fits the hand
There is a gem that lies unpolished, still to be lifted from the sand.
There is a voice that longs to rise. There is a gift of love to give.
There is an eye for grace and surprise, waiting to bless the life we live.

May the dance take me lightly in its arms
may the song lift me gently on its wings.
May the fires of creation burn brightly in my heart
that I might so briefly touch the magic of all things.

For Spacious Skies Jim Scott ©1992

Past lives they have no rest; their ashes sting our eyes to tears.
Now we guard our breath as spirits haunt the sky for countless years.
We have scorched the earth and boiled the seas
till there's no place left to hide.
Will we now melt down the sky?
Time is not on our side.
Though we take our wars up to the stars,we have built on times of sand
That even as we watch, slip through the fngers of our hand.

On wings of song, on wings of peace, as the dove so swiftly flies,
Lift every voice in harmony and sing for spacious skies.

Who would claim these tools of genocide, preserve peace and harmony?
We must not buy from those who sell such insecurity.
That Samson bring the rafters down, we live in common dread.
Common folk resist, lest one more thing be held above our head.

On wings of song, on wings of peace, as the dove so swiftly flies,
Lift every voice in harmony and sing for spacious skies.

Beyond the earth out past the weight and force of gravity,
Is there enlightenment and space for true equality?
Or will the human trials persist wherever humans go,
And will the short of sight resist horizons wider than we know?

How long the greed and avarice? How long the conquerors lineage?
How long will callous victors reap the spoils of heritage?

On wings of song, on wings of peace, as the dove so swiftly flies,
Lift every voice in harmony and sing for spacious skies.

Love Is On Your Side Jim Scott ©1992

Look inside your heart, find the love that's hiding there
Deep within you'll find compassion that we need to share
Though you think you've lost your faith in love,
it just found a place to hide
Gone the way of the wounded heart, but love is on your side.

How could you know that true intent could hide behind such lies?
So is the way of wounded hearts, forced to travel in disguise.
Does it mean you've had to learn to seek love by any other name?
Dance too close and you'll get burned by the fancy of the flame.

Time and time you watch love fly, reaffirming all your fears.
Charmed by the elusive wind; bid it stay, it disappears.
Now tossed upon a foreign shore, you find nothing you can hold on to,
So you turn again to lessons learned to recreate the hurt you knew.

There is a voice, once so distant, that grows closer with each word.
Has it been there all the time? How could it have not been heard?
When a heart can't hold forgiveness you can search so far and wide.
You'll never find the power that holds the world in love,
until you start to look inside your heart. (etc.)

Season of Change Jim Scott ©1985

    1) So you've pushed back the wilderness
and you've fought for your piece of land.
    Now your hunger is forgotten
as the earth pays on demand.
But what has your hard won peace afforded
amid the cries of those in need,
who, like the soil, know the tyranny of wealth
    and the bondage of poverty

    Chorus: Season of change -
    My eyes are open
I know the debt must be repaid.
I'm just lookin' for love to save us
    From the mistakes we've made.

2.) So now the great nations are defended
and the speeches have all been read,
But have we learned to live in harmony,
    oh people, we've been misled.
So you know of the inhumanity
but you feel so powerless alone,
And the distant cries grow louder,
    bringing it all back home.

    Chorus

3.) You say you're not participating
but we're all caught in this warring race.
And how long can the earth keep waiting
for us to put nature back in place?
We're all together, under the gun,
    and the crisis grows alarming,
But I know that the solution
is to disarm, and be disarming.

You want to tell me it's out of our hands,
tell me we have no choice.
Well I may be just one man,
but you're gonna hear my voice.

    Chorus

    Clearing Jim Scott ©1994

Did we ever think we'd come this far?
and were the lessons meant to be this hard?
    Vision blurred, horizon shrouded,
    refuge of privelege so overcrowded.
More to myself I speak aloud some words of inspiration.

There will come a clearing - of heart and hands connection,
separate souls reflection. I will wait let it be soon.
There will come a clearing - where mysteries are revealed
    and lovers' doubts are healed
and we will watch the stars
and the rising of the moon.

    Guidance from seductive forms,
the passage thick with flowerless thorns -
All in all nothing to fear, the rewards are rich, the prices dear.
You just get too tired to hear, the sound of your own resignation.

There will come a clearing - where all that's lost will be redeemed,
here somewhere between the earth and sky and love and dreams
There will come a clearing - where words are laid to rest,
my love will know the tune
and we will watch the stars
and the rising of the moon.

    Lion Jim Scott ©1985

I'm the lion in Central Park, not feelin' my best today.
I'd rather not be seen in this condition, but I guess that's not for me to say.
You rescued me from the steaming jungle
and put me safe on this cement floor,
Far away from the dangers of the wild,
there's no runnin' with the pride anymore

Too old to fight, too tired for rage, heart of a lion dyin' in a cage.
Too tired to resist, but too old to change.
Outside the seasons change, but the bars still look the same

    Thank you for your civilization
-food from a can, water from a pipe, electric lights.
Hey, I'm sure glad I don't have to lie out in the grass,
    under the stars at night.
Was I crowding you? Was I threatening you?
When I looked you in the eye were you afraid?
    Nowadays I just look away,
rather than confront you in the world you made.

In Africa the rain would come and heal the parched earth.
In here the water seeps between the stones.
Like the sweat of a toxic body, with a chill right to the bones.
Central Park was my refuge from the city,
you learn to live with what you know ain't right.
They take your rights, your pride, it's a compromise,
But when they take all you own, would you stand up and fight?
When they come for the one you love you just might.

If you cared enough to look below the surface
you might be surprised with what you'd find.
Your blue eyes see the skin of a black man,
But I'm the lion - I'm the lion - I'm the lion - lion in my mind.

Common Ground Music - Ivan Lins Intersong Music ASCAP
Lyrics - Paul Winter, Michael Holmes, John Guth, Joel Sattler, Jim Scott

Voices are calling 'round the earth.
Music is rising in the sea.
The spirit of morning fills the air,
    guiding my journey home.
Where is the path beyond the forest?
Where is the song I always knew?
I remember it's just around the bend,
in the village the music never ends.

In a circle of friends, in a circle of sound.
All our voices will blend when we touch common ground.

Somewhere is the melody we need.
    There is a certain harmony,
Even a rhythm in the trees,
in the song that we've always known.
As every road comes to its end,
So every path must cross again.
Now I'm returning to my heart,
back to the song that is our own.

In a circle of friends, in a circle of sound.
All our voices will blend when we touch common ground.

This Song Ain't About Nothin' Jim Scott ©1990

This song ain't about nothin'. There's no subject that I'm on.
Just some harmony and some words to sing to leave you when I'm gone.
This song ain't about nothin' there's no big thing I'm goin' through.
It's just a feeling that comes over me
when I think about sittin' 'round with you.

It ain't about how love conquers all. It's not about lies and truth,
Or how the Summer turns to Fall, or glimpses of fleeting youth.
I won't hold forth on war and peace, or the fallacy of "might makes right,"
Or law and order, or national defense, or young boys spoilin' for a fight.

This song ain't about lonely hearts, or loveless, homeless, sleepless nights.
Don't need to tell you 'bout hunger or the struggle for human rights.
This song ain't about nothin', but I'd just like to say
That I hope it makes you happy. Too late, I played it anyway.

I won't take on the mystical, or where disembodied spirits go.
Won't get too outspoken political, they'd never play it on the radio.
It's not about feelings either, don't want you to think I'm blue.
I just like to hold this guitar, and the instrumental comes right on cue.

This song could be about healing, but I won't play doctor here now.
The music's power can be revealing of all that our hopes and fears allow.
This song ain't about gratitude, This moments so brief,
but memories last so long, so
Thanks you can spare me the platitudes, just say:
" Remember when Jim was playin' that song?"
    . . . "about nothin'."
