A Song for the Earth

SATB, with optional flute/ oboe. One of my first environmental anthems, this describes the water cycle and what human pollution has done. The Oneness of Everything
This eco-anthem works well for group singing or a solo voice. The traditional hymn style melody was intended to have a more contemporary feel, not too somber, with steady folk/rock rhythm. The long phrases can be a challenge to maintain the meaning of the words as all in one sentence so don’t get too slow. Uncovering the secrets of scale construction can five you a better handle on spontaneous improvisation and creating melodies. By exploring scale patterns from several different angles, you will develop the ability to let the notes fall underneath your fingers, moving seamlessly from one position to the next.
We’ll start off with the major scale—how it’s constructed, how it visualize it on a single string and then the entire fretboard, and how to come up with usable patterns. The core of our exploration will be a concept called rows—a unique way of looking at scales across the neck that will help you in developing fingerings and in memorizing and transposing scales.
After the major scales, we’ll look at the other scale types—pentatonic, blues, natural minor, harmonic minor, melodic minor, whole tone, diminished, chromatic—and the modes.
Along the way, we’ll explore a number of practice techniques, including sequential fingerings, the circle of fifths, and improvisation using chord-scales and motifs. We’ll even go off the beaten path to touch on harp-style fingerings and alternate tunings.

Gather the Spirit SATB
$4.00This ¾ tune in a swinging gospel style has gotten wide acclaim and use as a congregational hymn in the Unitarian Universalist Church as well as some other denominations. This choral arrangement adds some counterpoint and different voice parts taking the lead. In a coda section there’s a 4/4 gospel, layered repeated riff that could draw in the congregation. It’s syncopated and may take a little time to figure out, but once you get the feel, it’s worth it – really rousing.
Tradition Held Fast
$4.00This was written as a closing song and it’s in the UU Hymnbook. It’s a hymn with a gospel beat, a 16 bar melody with an 8 bar intro/interlude. The central message is taken from a Native American saying: once we have shared in this circle together, the circle doesn’t break, it just opens. As the third verse gets to the word “opens” the music takes us to a coda. “…opens – to every fate of life, and every open heart.”

Some of Jim’s most loved hymns, anthems and songs of a more meditative quality are recorded here with Matt Johnsen and the MSTG Choir. Jim calls this collection his “spiritual philosophy in song,” with six of his songs that are included in the UU Hymnbooks. They range from a capella to gospel and contemporary styles. Jim sings a solo part of most of the songs and accompanies on guitar with piano, bass and drums rhythm section on some. The “Master Singers to Go” (MSTG) is a 16 member ensemble of singers who are part of the larger Master Singers of Worcester MA.
All the choir arrangements on the CD are available, some both as SATB with solo and for SATB choir alone.
