Earth and Spirit Songbook Volume 2

Now collecting songs for this new songbook I’m happy to announce that I’m compiling and writing a sequel to my Earth and Spirit Songbook. Earth and Spirit book 2 will have the subtitle “Songs For A Just And Peaceful World” and as that suggests, a wide selection of songs. I’m going to include some human ecology – Civil Rights and Labor songs - while certainly keeping the environmental context. I am collecting songs of Earth, peace on Earth – anything with Earth imagery, rites...

Hands On – My first album of solo guitar rereleased

It’s just 40 years since I went into a studio and recorded a bunch of instrumental guitar pieces. I had recorded before. I’d been on recordings for other people, particularly with the Winter Consort, but this felt different. I’d always been hired to do a job, this time I was paying for it myself.  I wondered why I was doing it even as I was doing it. This album was originally called Jim Scott – Alone. But that sounds lonely,...

Heart in Another Land

My new album of songs is out now! For some time I have had the idea to make an album of Latin, Brazilian and Caribbean rhythms with a bit more of a jazz sensibility.  Heart in Another Land refers to my love of these cultures and sounds so suited to my nylon string classical guitar. There's a little less focus on my socially conscious Earth and peace messages in this one, but also some fun. It's pretty much a trio of guitar,...

Everyone Is Welcome Here

7 Songs for Kids Celebrating Life, Peace and Justice on this Earth You can get an idea what it’s about just from the titles.   Everyone Is Welcome Here, Compassion Is The Word, I Have Been Wondering, We’re Different, I Have A Voice, Building Peace, This Web of Life . I was commissioned recently by the Kinston NC Universalist Church to compose these songs that celebrate principles that are the priorities in the Unitarian Universalist denomination.  Some might just find these sentiments secular, but...

Pete Seeger’s 100th Birthday Songfest

Remembering Pete in Song Pete Seeger was born 100 years ago this May 3rd. I knew Pete for many years and collaborated on various projects with him. I try to be sure to say I’m literally one of thousands of musicians who played with Pete at some time or other. So, I might second-guess, why I should be doing such a program? I have to say it’s not only fun but pretty exhilarating singing Pete’s hits, If I Had a...

Announcing Earth and Spirit Songbook Volume 2

Now collecting songs for this new songbook I want to announce to all you friends that I will be compiling and writing a sequel to my “Earth and Spirit Songbook” over the next year and a half (by spring/summer 2019).  I got a grant from the Fund For Unitarian Universalism to help with it, and I am now the “Artist in Residence” for the UU Church of Worcester MA.  The book is not just for UU Church consumption, it is...

The World Needs You – My Get Out the Vote Song

Introducing “The World Needs Your Voice” I probably don’t need to tell you how important the upcoming midterm elections will be.  I was inspired to write and record a new get-out-the-vote song, “The World Needs Your Voice”, which I’m excited to share with you here.  Let’s spread this message everywhere we can in the months leading up to our elections next fall, and let’s work with the NAACP and others who are trying to turn out the vote and register...

What we don’t need: any more guns

It’s been about a month since 17 innocent high school students were murdered in Parkland, Florida using a weapon of war.  There’s no reason for a civilian to own one of these semiautomatic rifles.  Lest you think this is the naive opinion of a singer-songwriter-guitarist, I will let you in on something: I’m a veteran.  Though I spent my service years in the Army band playing guitar,  I had to go through basic training like everyone else and learned...

A Note From Jim

I’ve been busy with new music lately.  My new choral piece For This We Stand was premiered several times this spring.  You can hear and see a demo of the songs at: Jim Scott Music YouTube Playlists. The written music is scrolling along with the playback. The performance with the Madison WI First Unitarian Church choir directed by Dan Broner was a great success. You can find the recording (any day now – check back). My producer and friend Dan Tinen has been...

New Choral Music

I’m delighted to be adding a section on this site for the choral music of my good friend Raymond Egan.  He’s one of the greatest musicians I know and composer of some wonderful choral music that has not been available on the web up until now.  For a list of the works that will be available soon, click here.
